Top Tips for Buying a Tablet

Tablets look set to play an increasingly important role in our digital lives, but with such a large selection of devices available on the market and many consumers being unaware of the differences, choosing one can be a daunting task.

The core benefits of most tablets are the same, offering much of the functionality of a laptop in a lightweight, portable device. However it is important to look deeper and consider the differences to find one that most closely matches your needs.

There are number of specific things to consider when choosing the right tablet for you:

1. Consider the intended use

The first thing you should think about is what you intend to use the tablet for, as this will be a key deciding factor in making your choice. Having this clear in your mind from the start will make your decision a lot easier.

If the purpose is to simply check e-mails, browse the web, stream videos or play games at home, then almost any model or brand would be good enough. However if you have more specific requirements, such as regular professional use, your options will be more limited.

This information also helps in choosing the right accessories like stylus, webcam, keyboard et al.

2. Operating System - Android vs. Apple vs. Windows

When it comes to choosing a tablet, one of the main decisions buyers have to make is the operating system, and there are three main options; Android, Apple iOS and Windows. Your choice of operating system will impact the devices you can choose and the software that is available you.

· iOS - The simplicity, high quality and wide choice of apps have made Apple the best known and most popular tablet brand, especially among those who own other Apple devices. Apple is the market leader in this space with over 725,000 native apps compatible with iOS.

iOS is only available on Apple devices such as the iPad, IPad Mini and the iPhone.

· Android - If you prefer Google services, Android could be the right choice for you. Android OS is highly customizable and has a wide range of apps available, rivalling the variety of the Apple App Store. It is updated regularly and the latest version is Android 6 Marshmallow.

As Android is an open source OS (meaning it is freely available and open for customization by all) it is widely used in a range of tablets. The most popular Android tablets are the Samsung Galaxy range and Google Nexus. Other tablets such as the Amazon Kindle Fire run heavily customized versions of Android.

· Windows - The selection of apps available for Windows devices is far smaller than Android or iOS but it may be easier to navigate for users who are accustomed to using Windows Laptops. Windows tablets are able to run the popular MS Office suite and are therefore favored by those who intend to use the tablet for work.

The best known Windows tablets are the Surface range from Microsoft, though a number of other brands such as HP have also released tablets running the Windows OS.

3. Size
Tablets vary in size, but can be broadly grouped into “mini”, “standard” and “large” categories, ranging from around 7 to 10 inches.

· Mini – e.g. iPad Mini, Nexus 7

The smaller devices are great for games, browsing the web while on the go, reading, watching videos, catching up on email and social media apps, but their small size and interface makes it more difficult to work on them.

· Standard – e.g. iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab S2

The standard size tablets offer an excellent middle ground for users who don’t require the portability of the “mini” range, and would prefer a larger screen for watching videos, playing games etc. The larger display size makes it easier to navigate some more intricate apps, but most would agree that it is not suitable as a replacement for the laptop.

· Large – e.g. Surface Pro, iPad Pro

The new breed of large display tablets are designed more with the professional in mind, attempting to eliminate the need for a laptop. For instance, the new Surface Pro 4 tablet from Microsoft is an excellent compromise, offering an interface you are used to, much of the functionality of your existing laptop or desktop PC, but in a slick, light weight device. Many view this as the only tablet that could viably replace your tablet.

Apple have also entered this market with the iPad Pro, a much larger tablet that makes it easier to work on.

4. Screen Resolution

Screen resolution impacts viewing quality. Larger screens come with higher resolution and give an excellent viewing experience. The iPad Air 2 and Nexus 9 for instance, offer excellent resolution. The blurry and dull display from a low resolution tablet strains the eye and is therefore not recommended for extended use. Choosing a tablet with an anti-reflective screen makes it easy to use in bright outdoor light.

Other key considerations:

· External Ports / connectivity - Having Bluetooth and NFC support along with additional ports for Micro USB, Micro SD and Micro HDMI will give a great boost to the convenience and usage possibilities. This makes it easier to upload pictures and data and link to other devices.

· Processor – The processor speed impacts how quickly the device runs. If you aim for a high GHz processor this ensures smooth running of all the latest games and apps.

· Wi-Fi / Mobile connectivity – All tablets will come with in-built Wi-Fi, but if you are plan on accessing the internet in areas that might not have Wi-Fi coverage you’ll need to thing about a mobile connection. 4G connectivity gives a high speed surfing and offers a greater browsing experience over 3G. A good data connection is essential not only for browsing but for accessing any of the GPS apps like maps or emergency services.

Note that while Wi-Fi connectivity is often free, a 4G connection will come with a monthly subscription fee.

While there is a plethora of information online, you should also consider discussing your options with the IT support staff in store who will make recommendations as to which brands and models are the best fit for you.

Using the guidelines above will hopefully help to make choosing a tablet that meets your needs and budget a less daunting task.

Tablets will become increasingly popular over the coming years, and investing this time to understand them now will stand you in good stead in the future.
